Introduction to Artificial Intelligence for Mental Health Professionals

A practical introduction to how artificial intelligence (AI) is changing the landscape for mental health professionals. With clear explanations and real-world examples, participants will explore how AI can assist with documentation, organization, and communication while balancing the provider’s judgment and ethics. The focus is on helping professionals make informed decisions about adopting technology that aligns with their values and practice needs. Ideal for those new to AI or looking to deepen their understanding, this session encourages thoughtful integration of emerging tools to enhance professionals skills.

Course Objectives:

1. Identify a variety of large language models of artificial intelligence. 
2. Understand the basic steps in using artificial intelligence regarding queries and threads. 
3. Identify artificial intelligence models and the features that are used in clinical practice. 

Dan Florell, Ph.D.

Dr. Dan Florell is a Professor at Eastern Kentucky University, and he runs a private practice. He trained school psychologists in a graduate program for 20 years. He has a Ph.D. in School Psychology from Illinois State University along with a Nationally Certified School Psychologist (NCSP), licensed psychologist, and APA Fellow of Division 16. Dr. Florell is actively involved in NASP and is the NASP Historian and Online Communication Coordinator. His main research focus is on artificial intelligence, technology, telehealth, professional issues, and the history of school psychology.
